Hamlet of Arviat ratifies new Collective Agreement

HAMLET OF ARVIAT – TENTATIVE AGREEMENT RATIFIED

With the assistance of a Conciliation Officer, the Hamlet of Arviat and the Public Service Alliance of Canada reached a tentative agreement on March 20, 2008. "Congratulations to the PSAC-NEU members of the Hamlet of Arviat and their Bargaining Team for their new collective agreement" said Jean-François Des Lauriers, Regional Executive Vice President - North. "It shows what can be done when workers act together in solidarity."

The three (3) year agreement was ratified by the membership on April 10, 2008.

Highlights of the agreement include:

• Economic increases of 3.0% in each year of the agreement;
• Settlement Allowance increased to $6500;
• Land Vacation Travel Assistance increases;
• Improvements to the Vacation Leave (30 days after 20 years);
• Pay adjustments for a majority of members effective April 1, 2007;
• New language on Freedom from Harassment, Freedom from Workplace Violence, Standby provisions, and Apprentices.

PSAC members in Arviat provide key municipal services such as water and sewage services, and building maintenance. They also maintain the airport, provide airport observer/communications and provide administrative support at municipal levels. The revised collective agreement has an expiry date of March 31, 2010.
