IT'S ALL ON THE TABLE
DID YOU KNOW.... There are attempts to eliminate defined benefit pension plans in Canada.
STOP the government from using federal and territorial public sector workers as scapegoats and attacking our pension plans!
DON'T ALLOW the government to remove early retirement incentives, such as being able to retire with a full pension at 55, after 30 years of service!
WE MUST FIGHT against any attack on public services and defined-benefit pension plans!

Folk on the Rocks
The Public Service Alliance of Canada proudly sponsored Folk on the Rocks for another year. On July 18th and 19th a display booth was set up at the festival site with a number of PSAC member volunteers attending to the booth, along with Heather Longstaff, Regional Organizer, Steve Petersen, PSAC Regional Representative/Health & Safety and Jean-François Des Lauriers, Regional Executive Vice President, PSAC North. Frisbees and bandanas were given away to the public and people were asked to fill out a Union quiz for a chance to win a Gift Certificate from Cellars Book store. The NWT Power Corporation anti-privatization petition was also available for signatures. Our booth was very well attended.
Jean-François Des Lauriers, Regional Executive Vice President, PSAC North introduced the band “The Red Power Squad” at the main stage on Sunday evening. Formed in early 1998 by founder Conway Kootenay, the Red Power Squad was designed to give inner-city youth a way out of all the negativity they faced. Almost 10 years later the Red Power Squad has exploded into a world wide success with their top notch Traditional Native Dance combined with Hip Hop.

Media Release: Nuna Contracting Ltd New Collective Agreement with PSAC/UNW
The Public Service Alliance of Canada and the Union of Northern Workers reached a tentative first Agreement with Nuna Contracting Ltd earlier this week, which was subsequently ratified on June 26th, 2008. Nuna Contracting employees at Giant Mine were previously represented by the Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC), whose contract expired on June 30, 2007.
Some of the highlights from Nuna Contracting's first agreement with PSAC/UNW includes:
- A total of 11.79% wage increases over 21 months, including vacation travel assistance, RRSP, and retroactive pay adjustments to the expiry of the last collective agreement with CLAC;
- Excellent provisions for job protection, human rights, and hours of work;
- Outstanding language for occupational health and safety measures, Union representation and Union rights.
"We are proud of this new collective agreement with the employees of Nuna Contracting, which includes increased benefits and outstanding language that protects worker's jobs and Union rights", says Jean-Francois Des Lauriers, PSAC Regional Executive Vice President. "I extend my congratulations to our new members and our bargaining team for their hard work in creating an agreement that provides these employees with more stability, protection, and empowerment in their workplace, with representation they can count on".

Territorial Residents surveyed on Labour Issues
The Northern Territories Federation of Labour, in partnership with its largest affiliate, the Public Service Alliance of Canada and its Union of Northern Workers component, recently commissioned a survey of labour issues affecting residents in the Northwest Territories.
Conducted by Sigma Analytics in July, the Labour Issues Research Project surveyed attitudes and opinions on a range of labour issues and matters related to them. Some of the issues included in the survey were healthcare recruitment, protecting the environment, schools and school programs, child care, housing, minimum wage and economic development.
The survey also assessed the gap between respondents’ expectations on these issues and actual performance and assessed support for a number of suggested initiatives.
Not surprisingly, the survey identified healthcare recruitment, the environment, housing and schooling among the issues rated as very important by Territorial residents.
For more information about the survey and a summary of the results, contact Mary Lou Cherwaty, President of the Northern Federation of Labour at NTFL@yk.comor 867-445-9797 (cell).

August 24, 2007 Trailcross Workers back to work
August 24, 2007
Trailcross Treatment Centre workers return to work Monday August 27
Members of the UNW/Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) working at Bosco Homes Trailcross Treatment Centre will be returning to work on August 27th.
"I am very pleased to announce that the bargaining team and the employer have now ratified a new collective agreement", said UNW President Todd Parsons. "The job these workers do with children at risk, is very important to the north, and now they can get on with their work."
The highlights of the new agreement include improvements to vacation leave, increased standby allowances and updated discrimination language. The employees will now be able to have their overtime paid out at their own discretion. The bargaining team was also able to achieve a pay increase of 3.2% effective April 1, 2006 and 3.2% effective April 1, 2007.
"I am glad that our members can now get on with the important service they provide to the at risk youth," said Jean-François Des Lauriers, PSAC Regional Executive Vice President. "I am concerned, however, that this labour dispute and the one at Nats ejee Keh, earlier this year, are an indication of how severely underfunded northern non-profit organizations are."
"These disputes are symptomatic of the contracting out of services by the Government of the Northwest Territories. When these services are contracted out to the lowest bidders so the government can save money, it is really the workers who pay the price with low wages and poor benefits. It is time to halt this contracting out and to start treating all employees fairly," said Des Lauriers.
