Yellowknife – Ekati diamond mine owner BHP Billiton has been deliberately hiding the profitability of its mine in order to improve the company’s position in negotiations with government agencies, non-governmental organizations and its own workers, according to a confidential email released today by the striking workers’ union.

• During mediation the Employer attempted to re-open already agreed to language – particularly where it concerns their ability to try and influence our members to cross legal picket lines – definitely an attempt to try to split the membership.
• The Employer is maintaining their demand for a two-tier pension plan. That would mean some members would get a defined benefit while others would have to contribute to their future retirement out of their own pockets.
